ATs Create Company to Care for Extreme Athletes
Clay Selby

Ever since my first athletic training class at the University of Northern Colorado, I knew I wanted to find a way to combine my love of skateboarding and snowboarding with the athletic training profession. This vision drove me to where I am today, as the cofounder and co-owner of a company dedicated to providing the best quality athletic training services, specializing in action sports.

My colleague, Robb Blackaby, ATC, and I created Medicine in Motion, LLC in 2010 with the belief that all athletes deserve the best quality health care when participating in sporting events. Our commitment to action sports began while skateboarding and snowboarding throughout the early 1980s. As participants and activists for these sports, we recognized the lack of support for the athletes involved. This provided the opportunity to educate people about the services athletic trainers can provide.

Prior to the formation of MIM, Blackaby and I worked together in true grassroots fashion by talking with athletes and event organizers about the benefits of having athletic trainers at athletic events. The majority of the athletes and organizers had never even heard of an athletic trainer and did not understand why they needed anyone around to tape an ankle, since they already knew how to do that with the same duct tape they used to hold their shoes together.

After many long conversations, it was clear that the only way to prove the benefit of an athletic trainer was by demonstration. The event organizers for the Vans Triple Crown Series of Skateboarding and Snowboarding allowed us the opportunity to show them what we could do. By the end of the first event, the response was overwhelming. Both the athletes and event organizers realized the benefit of athletic trainers. Soon we began traveling nationwide, expanding our athletic training services to snowboarding and BMX competitions.

In 2010, ESPN approached us to coordinate medical services for the Summer X Games 16 in Los Angeles. We accepted the offer without hesitation, realizing we would need a much bigger staff. This request provided the perfect storm, and Medicine in Motion was born. The staff at Summer X Games 16 included 20 athletic trainers, supervised by both allopathic and osteopathic physicians, working harmoniously to provide optimal preventive and rehabilitative care to the athletes.

Medicine in Motion, LLC is currently the proud sports medicine provider for ESPN’s national and international X Games events, Vans Skateboarding competitions, Megaramp events, and the Bud Light Lime Surf Series. To contact us, visit our website at:

Clay Selby, MS, ATC, PA-C, previously toured nationally and internationally with the U.S. Snowboarding half-pipe team and currently holds a full-time position with Steadman Hawkins Clinic Denver as a physician assistant, working as a clinician and first assistant in surgery. He provides outreach services to local high schools in addition to his involvement with MIM.

Robb Blackaby, ATC, has provided medical care at various events, including the 2002 Winter Olympics, 2008 and 2009 Junior World Championships of Snowboarding and Tony Hawk’s Skatepark Tour. He works closely with the Oakland A’s Baseball Organization and is certified through the Titleist Performance Institute as a golf fitness instructor. Blackaby currently owns and operates The Desert Institute of Physical Therapy in Scottsdale, Ariz.
